A camera-based people counting system consisting of an embedded platform and a software for counting people is developed in this project. The hardware is based on a Raspberry Pi with a camera module and a low-cost display. This is used for outputting the counting results. The camera is mounted at the ceiling in a height of approximately 3 m and captures top-view images of the scene. The application counts the number of moving up and down people in the camera’s field of view. It is recommended to mount the system above a door. A special focus is set on an intelligent choice of algorithms and an efficient implementation to compensate hardware limitations.
